“Man, ‘ukulele players today don’t realize how good they’ve got it.”
We hear this a lot. Back in the old days, in order to get good at playing the ‘ukulele, you had to scramble to find old Ohta San cassette tapes, endlessly rewinding and re-playing the critical picking patterns. Or hunt down old music teachers or musicians on their off time, to help figure out just what to hold. Or set the VHS player perfectly, in the hope of catching that epic Ka’au Crater Boys performance on Hot Hawaiian Nights.
No longer. The power of the internet has helped open up another dimension to ‘ukulele awareness and education the likes of which have never been dreamed of before. And it’s only getting started.
In 2006, K-Town Heroes Productions was created as a means to create content for the Hawaii networking site, IamHawaii.com. After producing a string of online ‘ukulele lessons for the site and garnering a loyal national and international following, the creators, Aldrine Guerrero, Aaron Nakamura, and Ryan Esaki, decided to create a site specifically for the purpose of supporting this growing online ‘ukulele community. Thus Ukulele Underground was born.
Now complementing online video lessons with shorter, “Uke Minutes” technical tips, live online broadcasts, personalized individual and group lessons, forum discussion, and more, Ukulele Underground strives to serve the world in the noble pursuit of ‘ukulele excellence.
If you think uke players have got it good now, take a look. It’s getting better all the time.
