Russ_Buss dropped the dibs on UU. He does all the Internet sleuthing and I just reap the rewards! haha
I stumbled on Seeso on UTube while looking for help on Santeria on the guitar. That was pretty cool. My sis then sends me a link to Jake's My Guitar Weeps vid and since Russ_Buss was getting a uku I decided to join in on the fun.
And I think I am getting the UAS!!!!

After the end of Iamhawaii I met with Aldrine while vacationing on Kauai`. Aldrine told me about the concept of UU and he was pretty excited about getting it up and running. It wasn't very long after I got back home that UU was launched. I believe Aldrine called me and told me about the forum going live and that's when I joined.

When I was doing uke searches, looking for opinions on different makes and models, I kept being directed to this forum. And here at this forum I found lots of nice people, lots of helpful tips, lots of knowledge and tons more talent. I thought that the past was in some of the other uke forums, but here was the future. And music is based on what we learned from the past, but it has always been, for the best musicians, about looking ahead. That was a philosophy I could get behind. :)

I was sending emails to both Woodshed from Ukulele Hunt (http://ukulelehunt.com/blog/) and Dominator, and both told me about here.

Hm. this was back in january.. I watched one of Aldrine's videos on youtube and he was talking about ukulele underground. I'm pretty sure it's that one video where he's talking then later plays the flashman theme. :D
I saw Aldrine and Danyo a WHILE ago when one of my friends showed me their video of 'is there a place'. I was like whoa! I remember thinking this guy can sing! and this guitar dude is really gooood hahaha. I loved it because it looked like people from Guam :p

Right on Jimmy! that right there does it for me. It's amazing to see so many uke players all in one forum who are happy to share their knowledge and experience. I've learned SO much since I joined UU and it's made me love playing music even more than before! OH and DOMINATOR is here. that prettty much seals the deal hahaha

A friend told me about it, the friend that also introduced me to the ukulele while i was in costa rica. I don't think he ever went on the forums but he learned some songs from the site. Either way, I'm really grateful I found this site. It has only enticed me more into the world of ukulele.

I joined because Jake said I could make a positive impact on this forum by sharing my endless uke knowledge.
Yeh...right. I don't even recall. I think I googled ukulele lessons....ended up at that Hawaiian site where Aldrine offered short lessons....then linked to the index page of the soon-to-be UU site... Had to patiently wait (checked almost daily) for the site to go active..
Super stoked I found UU and the cool people that make this a great forum!!

I heard about it somewhere and did a "fly-by" but at the time was trying to cut down on my online time, not add to it.
Then Woodshed plugged it during the drive where you got more chances to win the swag for each person you got to sign up and thought, what the heck, I can do that for Woodshed.
So here I am. At least every once in a while.

So i clicked the vid and found out about www.ukuleleunderground.com
I was like WOER! "An entire website dedicated to ukuleles." wow.
after i changed my pants i went onto your site and got on.

The Kala soprano giveaway led me here. I saw the video on Aldrine's Youtube channel promoting the giveaway, and decided to sign up and try my luck. I had actually visited the forums before that, but hadn't actually registered until that video. I believe the first time was probably due to Google.
And it was only a month after I joined that I actually realized that there was a site beyond the forums with all of the same great lessons that I had enjoyed on iamhawaii. Then I realized that I had indeed stumbled upon gold.

Well it all began as I started up the internet. checked my myspace. saw aldrines bulletin about the site. registered. and yeah. thats pretty much it.
omg scratch my first post about how I got here. I remember now haha I watched NDtitanlady's video of her doing a cover: "First Day of My Life" and then it linked to Aldrine's Youtube Page (I was like Ooooh I remember him from hella years ago playing Glamorous Sky on the uke! haha), and I saw the Kala KA-S giveaway video and I was like "oooh I want!" but sadly I was too late by a few days and didn't join the forums.. haha but yea I joined later on obviously. xP

Saw Aldrine's video on YouTube last summer with him playing Mario / Zelda on the Ukulele! My dad always had a ukulele around the house when I was growing up but not one really played.
Decided that I need to learn an instrument (Besides recorder hahah!) and Ukulele had to be it.
NDTitanLady posted a bulletin on MySpace that she was performing live. And then I saw that the event was hosted by UU. Yeayuhzz =]

I began thinking of buying a Uke after hearing one in some tunes I was listening to. I love the sound, the cultural identity, the island/surf/spiritual vibe I get when I hear one. I think it's a very special instrument. I began searching other forum sites in early May reading reviews. UU exhibits a friendly inviting (maybe Aloha?) spirit where some other sites can exhibit a contentious spirit. That's no bull. I want to learn, and the UU spirit invites me, so I'm here. I hope that isn't too "Out there". :)

I'm just thinking back to that fateful moment watching the Beatles Anthology. Man George did make that uke look fun. And guitar always seemed ridiculously huge, and now even more so.
But my husband, confusing it with this God-awful lute/mandolin thing his dad has, said "No, the strings are really close to together and they're doubled up, it's really really hard to play."
Because I listened to him, I put it out of my mind for years, until a was watching the flash intro over at Bathys Hawaii (http://www.bathyshawaii.com). A watch is what woke me up to ukes.
I had to sell one of those Bathys to get the Uklectic, but I ain't regrettin' it, fine watch though it was.

After looking at what must be thousands of ukulele vids and web pages, my mind is now a blur on things ukulele, but I think it went something like this. Last year I somehow happened upon the Guacomole Ukulele song and sweetafton23's vids and thought what a cool instrument the uke was for strumming and singing kitsch (and I don't mean it in the derogatory sense) songs. Listening to them, I think, "Hey I could do that." Since I don't have a very good voice, kitsch is important to any future success I might have. Then again Willie Nelson, who I love, really has no voice either does he?
Jake and Dominator and a bunch of other really accomplished video ukers also had influence, although in my sober moments I don't usually think I could do what they do on the instrument. . Of course none of that is not to diminish the seeds undoubtedly planted in my brain at an early age by Arthur Godfrey, and whoever else played it on 1950's TV. Once smitten, the magic of hypertext threaded links and Google eventually led me here.

Over the past year and a half, I've been googling information about ukulele. Almost everything I searched for (chords, tabs, information on which to buy next, etc) gave me results of forums at UU. For a while I just used it that way, stumbling upon a thread or two that would help me to decide on something thanks to the help of all of the fantastic, knowledgeable, and just really nice people here.
Eventually I decided that I wanted to join and participate. I was a little embarrassed about my first experience with ukulele, since a lot of people who were ukulele experts were leaving comments ripping apart my first attempt to play and write a song on this instrument, which I was saying incorrectly and didn't know how to tune and was too obnoxiously excited about. I think I know a bit more now, even though I'm still getting hater comments on that same video, so I wanted to become a part of this community. :)
You guys are awesome!

I had no idea of the existence of the UU. I was selling a cigar box instrument on E-Bay and was contacted by Dominic Altieri 3-16-2009 - here's an excerpt from the e-mai:
"hummmm so you make them for people!! and they sell for LESS than the auction?? what kinds of custom things can you do.. i might want to order one.. i want a cigar box bluegrass uke.. but they are not cheap.. plus i like the idea of knowing the guy who makes them.. and having input.. i like the one you have up right now a lot! does the back still open up?
can you make them have a resonator?
are you on ukulele underground.. i want to send people your way!! then i will get outbid!!! hmmmm

I have only played percussion instruments, and that was 20+ years ago. I have been in love with the uke for many years and love music and stringed instruments in general. I decided that the uke would be my conduit to express my inner musician. I do not know how to read music, but want to learn. After perusing this forum I thought that this might be a rewarding community to join. So…Hello from Athens, Georgia!

i'm new to the ukulele. i used to play a little tenor sax and piano.
i like jazz and ran across some Jake Shimabukuro and fell in love with the uke.
i went on to youtube to check out some uke artists. i tripped across seeso's "Waiting in Vain by Bob Marley on Ukulele" and really dug it. i took the red pill, went down the rabbit hole and ended up here.

My girlfriend bought me a guitar for my birthday... after some lessons and a bit of frustration I decided to go one step simpler, at the same time I was listening to a lot of bluegrass tributes (look up Iron Horse!), so I bought a banjo. In my area I couldnt find a banjo teacher that wasnt just a guitar teacher that would figure it out right there on the spot, so I went simpler again. After about 3 years of playing the uke I absolutely love it and I have been able to translate the theory back to the other instruments and more.

...that you wake up and a friend of yours tells you that your video is one of the 4 best ukulele perfomance of the year!
I want to thank ken and JumpingFlea for the nominee, and Ukulele Underground for creating such a great Award!
But thank is not enaugh! Grazie Amici!
this site is a complete new world for me! A magic one! Just think that today I've seen all the nominees for every category, and most of the video for the first time! the impact has been amazing, i felt so many different sensations, and I realized what a marvelous community is this! How everyone cares for the things that really matters in life, and how they care for each other. I live in Italy, a country of TV Adicted-Hypnotyzed people. Finding guys like all of you is like breathing fresh air.

I stumbled upon it, right after the launch (of course, at the time, I didn't know it had just launched). I had watched some Seeso videos and just found UU while looking for as much uke stuff as I could. I had never joined a forum before this one so I stalked it for a month or two (although my memory is sort of rough from that time period, so I may have only stalked for a couple weeks, dont remember).
I joined in Feb of 08. Mostly read the forums (with the occasional post, when my minimal knowledge could be used :p), didnt do any MAJOR posting until much further down the road. Had to learn the ropes before getting in the ring. Now I'm a PW. Thanks a lot guys

I've always loved the ukulele, I finally decided to buy one and learn to play, I Googled "best ukulele for a beginner" and ended up here!
I've lurked for a couple of weeks, reading different threads and watching the videos. I finally took the plunge tonight and ordered a Makala Concert Ukulele with aquilas from musicguymic on Ebay...and now I wait.
I figure I should be ringing in the New Year with my new ukulele! Of course, I have no idea how to play, but damn! She'll be nice to look at! ;-P

Like many others here at UU. I have many intrests. One of which is metal detecting. A metal detectorist friend of mine, Patrick, from Pearl City, Hawaii. Ask me to look at his video he submitted for Bosko & Honey 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VJmrNvARY0&feature=channel). He so to speak planted the seed. I started looking into 'ukulele all over the web and in turn found Julia Nunes (Buttercup) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeP1Klmk0ng) <-- makes me laugh and eventually I found ukulele underground web site which led me here. Theres no turning back now! I'm hooked.

I was having the Kala/Lanikai debate and could not figure out which one to buy and all the right answers were in these forums!
I am a guitar player with short fingers. So I am excited to transition into the Uke! I have spent DAYS deciding which Uke was right for me, getting more and more expensive the more I looked.
I finally settled on a solid spruce top of whatever I chose... THEN... I fell in love with the spalted maple Kalas! When it comes in I will add some pics to the Uke porn thread because the wood grain is to DIE for!
So excited to be part of UU!

So I am a new user...I am a 26 year old math teacher from Cincinnati, Ohio. I have 2 ukuleles - a Lehua soprano long neck and a Lehua tenor ukulele. I have been playing ukulele for a bit, but have had a habit of playing my uke like a little guitar. I've just really started getting into learning to do some of the classic uke strummings and such. Needless to say, being from Cincinnati, I have trouble finding people to play with, or anywhere to find ukulele lessons to help out with my technique, so I really focus on some of the youtube tutorials and teaching myself.
Great to be a part of a community where everyone plays uke!
Hah I was interested in the hip-hop ukulele video contest. I registered so I could enter, and even though I didn't win the contest I was still on this great site. UU wins

I have played bass guitar for 29 years, and got a really cheap lousy ukulele sometime after George Harrison died. He's what got me interested in ukulele to start with. I messed about with it a bit and then stuck it away and forgot about it for several years. For some reason last December I pulled it out again, and started looking on Youtube for ukulele videos and instructional things. I quickly realized that my ukulele was not very good (I have since given it to my 5 year old nephew). So I poked around on eBay and discovered MusicGuyMike and got a Kala Gloss Mahogany Concert. UAS followed shortly thereafter and now I have 11 ukes. I am gradually getting better at playing the thing, but I've always had kind of a collector mentality since I was a little kid. I am totally enamored with this instrument (I do still love playing bass and count myself lucky to get to play what I think are the two coolest stringed instruments there are).
I discovered UU when I saw some of Aldrine's instructional things on Youtube. I had never really looked at the website much until the last couple of weeks or so, and decided to sign up tonight.
Uke on!

Google!
I've recently picked up a ukulele for the first time (February 6, 2010) and I've yet to put it down... except when I'm at school and work. I played the violin for some time (about 4 years ago), but lost interest and I've recently tried playing the acoustic guitar, but I had a big problem with going from chord to chord (I have small hands and a full size acoustic). When I first picked up the ukulele, I just knew it was going to be forever love!! The soprano is the perfect size for me ^______________^

I had just got out of the hospital and was convalescing in bed with my laptop and saw an article about the ukulele making a comeback. I started searching the web on ukuleles and found there are a lot of really nice (read: expensive) ukuleles on the market other than the $10 special I had when I was young. I became fascinated with the uke and now have to have one. I'm still unable to walk at the moment but getting better every day and hope to be back mobile in a month or so. I can't wait to get to the music store to buy the uke I have decided on (The Fender Nohea Tenor in Koa wood). So now I want to connect with others that have the passion so forums are the way to go.

I bought a cheap little soprano about 5 years ago while planning a trip to Fiji/Oz/N.Zealand, I needed something to do while sitting on the beach. Long story short I turned back on the way to catch my plain to stay with the girl I was seeing at the time (my advice: don't do that) I tried looking online for some good lessons and there was nothing at the time, just old traditional stuff when I was looking for newer stuff. After about a month of that the Uke got put on the back burner.
Fast forward to last July when I was just playing around online looking for good cover songs and I happened on a YouTube video of Aldreine (I probably spelled it wrong) and I was hoked. I pulled the Uke out of the closet and have been playing since. Thank God for this site because I am in love with these little things now and the lessons have helped me so much! (Hopefully this will pay off in my current woo-ing attempt)
I'm about to purchase a Mainland concert and become a real little player now and have this sight and all the people here to thank for that! basically I check this site and ukuleletabs daily.
Thanks everyone!

My brothers said they wanted to learn to play when they started watching BJ Penn's fights. I wanted to support them in their new hobby. So we went out and bought three beginner ukes, Makala soprano's. In the process of buying them, we met this really cool guy who referred us to this site. At first i was just supporting my brothers, but then i got hooked myself because of the ease of playing(bc i also play guitar) and the site was just so beginner friendly thanx to Aldrine. So i bought a concert and i cant put it down. I pushed all my other hobbies aside because of it.I have to check the site everyday for new stuff to learn. Actually, i think my girl is a little jealous. So i learn songs that she likes and i play them for her. And what do you know, I get extra extra quality time, if u know what i mean.

I'm a college student who lives in a tiny dorm room. I've always loved music, but none of my instruments are small enough to tote back and forth from home to school. Plus, I wanted an instrument that people would really be interested in when they saw me playing it. :) I saw some videos of ukuleles and fell in love. And I fell HARD. I've played several instruments through the years, but I've never loved one as much as I love my uke! The fact that I could find a decent one that fits my jobless-college-student budget sealed the deal for me. While I was doing research about which uke to buy, I came across this forum, and everyone here was so nice and helpful that I joined! :D

I have been playing the violin for the last couple of years now, lately I've been searching for a Viola to add to my collection. During my hunt for one my friend found an antique mall in our area that had a whole section with musical instruments one of which was a pretty cheap viola, so I headed down there that night, and they also had a banjolele. I was pretty excited about it, went home counted up all my spare change and ended up getting a pretty decent instrument for a really great price. While waiting for it to be restrung at my frequented music store I've been looking up different tabs and songs to get started once I get it back, and I stumbled upon this site, it looks like there are a lot of good references and helpful people so I'm happy to join!

hmm... tiffy asked me to teach her how to play ukulele... I didn't know how but figured out the basics and had so much fun that I decided I needed one... got one on craigslist... started writing songs right away... recorded a song with my iPhone and put it up on YouTube, promptly forgot about it... then Craig Robertson posted a link to it on the Uke Cosmos (but I didn't know it)... then Kris saw it and looked me up online and friended me... and he told me about both the Cosmos and the Underground:) And now I'm seriously considering writing most of my new songs on uke... it's more fun to do things with a community of people than by yourself. !!

A very good friend of mine told me to check out Aldrine in YouTube. So I did and the rest is hx. Been an official member after entering UUs "the legend of the ohana ukulele" story writing contest (which a lot of peeps joined at that time).
Anyhoo, welcome to the UU, Annie. You will like it here. The peeps are sincere and humble regardless if one is a beginner or a vet. Aloha.

I was on youtube looking for uke videos. I found the ukulele underground channel and I subbed right away. I came to this website because one of the uke got mail videos got me curious ( I can't remember which one.)

I think I was looking for uke tabs and found UU, or I might have combined the search terms, "ukulele" and "Seattle," found Uncle Rod's SUPA, and then noticed UU in the mix. I started the search, because I finally got serious about doing justice to my KoAloha and learning it.
Either way, Ukulele Underground has all the hallmarks of being the best music website in the world. If it isn't already, I claim dibs on the first psychic prediction. While I do like Harmony Central a lot, I have to say that UU is mo bettah:

I found UU while looking for guitar play alongs on Youtube actually. I saw one of Aldrine's videos and I though "hey, that sounds pretty dope, maybe I should give it a try". Saved up a tiny bit of money, went to my local music store that sells cheap ukes, and here I am now, enjoying my time surfing the net with my uke by my side, and killin' some time at UU. :)

I've passed through her several times in the past without it registering. Over the last few days I keep bumping into the place and to be frank it is very user friendly, informative and active. There is an air and a buzz here that I had never noticed before. I think thi9s site has changed into something vibrant but what the changes are, I do not know.

I saw "Joe Versus the Volcano" many years ago. Tom Hanks sings The Cowboy Song while playing his ukulele sitting on a luggage raft in the middle of the ocean. Ever since then I wanted to learn to play the uke. Last year I got a summer catalog from my Community College and there was a one time, 2-hour Ukulele class and you got a ukulele with the class! I signed up and spent a month searching ukulele links online. I saw one of Aldrine's videos on YouTube which led me here. I am excited to start classes!

Hi! This is Gretchen Henry or Abundamedia.
I was lucky enough to be in Needmore this past weekend for the UWC 2010 festivities with my friend, Mark Southard. I heard about this site thru several conversations.
WOW! I'm not a uker -- more of a ukey groupie. But, I play the cajon (drum) and Mark plays the uke. We sang our songs and got to sit in on some tunes during Uke or Dare on Saturday. We played from 10 til 4. It was awesome.

Hmmm. I like instruments. I was very good at the clarinet in HS and can plunk away at the piano well enough to entertain inebriated company. Also, I play a bit of guitar. But, to be honest, I never really got into it. I'm a 5'2" smaller-type girl and the guitar always seemed way too large for me. And while I was "okay" at playing basic nonsense, I never really found much pleasure in it because it always seemed to be some large, clunky thing on my lap.
I've also had some strange obsession with the Hawaiian culture for years now. I'm not sure what started it, really. I read a book called "The Secrets and Mysteries of Hawaii: A Call to the Soul" and there was so much in it I just adored. I think my interest in Hawaii was renewed sometime last year when I read an article about how the last surviving speaker of a certain language had died ... and things like that just really upset me. I know Hawaiian isn't in danger of dying out any time soon, but the way cultures are being snuffed out by corporations and sameness and the typical "American Way" -- argh, argh. I spent a week trying to pick up the basics of the Hawaiian language online before I realized that without someone to help, I was sort of going nowhere.
Oh, and this is my favorite quote from that book:
And all along the way of life there were only the three things that counted. Something to do, something to look forward to, and the third one, that blessing, if it ever happens... someone to share it with.
Having something to do is really important to me. Anyway I was thinking about how I not only have a 4-day-weekend coming up but summer break and if I don't fill these gaps with something other than work/computer/sleep, I go crazy! So I picked a new hobby. The ukulele.
A link to UU was the first link at the bottom of the wikipedia article. :D

Strange, same reason as above--I'm 5'2" as well. Except it was my brother's guitar, and I wanted some kind of unique instrument and the banjo was too country sounding, and mandolin was far too expensive ($500-$1000 for a beginners!). So while considering uke, and looking at uke music theory before I got it, I came here. Awesome!

Well I'm JD, and I have gotten to know more and more UU folks in the past year or so. Deach and some others. I get on Tokbox for the jam session sometimes, and I am an Asst. Organizer of the NOVA Ukulele Ensemble meetup group. I love the ukulele now thanks to Moses who introduced me to the instrument, and in particular I am partial to Hawaiian music. I love the language the the architecture of the songs, and how deeply cultural it is and how well it combines with cultural expression through dance (such as the Hula). I hope to learn how to become a competent player of the Ukulele and share music and jams with other like-minded folks. Aloha all!

I was trying to find local Uke/Music clubs or groups in Anchorage, AK. Figured this would be a good place for all things Uke.
Practice is the hardest thing to keep consistent. I'm interested in meetups or clubs or anything that will keep it interesting, challenging and fun. Especially during the winter months in AK.

I'm a Taylor guitar fan and spend a lot of time at the AcousticGuitarForum and whenever ukes or uke forums came up, people always mentioned Ukulele Underground. I wasn't interested at the time but when the Uke bug hit me, I remembered the name and came straight here.

I am thinking about creating a local zine about ukuleles to bring together a community of players in my area. I thought a forum may help me with ideas on rants or things to put in my zine. I also just wanted to be a part of something where people have the same interest as me. I went to Google and searched for ukulele forums and this one looked legit and fun. :) Thanks for having me!
